What is the difference between a 'Work Permit' and 'Declaration of Law'

What is the difference between a 'Work Permit' and 'Declaration of Law'

When it comes to working in Curaçao, it is important to understand the difference between a “Work Permit” and a “Declaration of Law.”

If you have Dutch or American nationality, you can stay in Curaçao as a “tourist” for up to six months a year and enjoy all the beauty that the island has to offer. However, if you want to work during this six-month period or afterwards, you must apply for the “Declaration of Law”. Although people often talk about a “work permit,” it is actually a permit for people with a Dutch or American nationality, which is called a Declaration of Law, abbreviated as VRW.

The procedure is different for persons with a different nationality. In this case, you must apply for a “Curaçao Permit” and a visa to be able to legally work on the island.

If you plan to work in Curaçao for more than eight consecutive months, you must also adjust your residence status. This is because Dutch people are not allowed to stay abroad for longer than eight months continuously. This means that you must officially deregister in the Netherlands and register in Curaçao in order to continue your long-term work adventure.
