How do I get a sedula?

A sedula is an identity card used in many Caribbean countries, such as Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao.

Once you have been granted your Declaration of Law or permit, you can officially register in the population register of Curaçao and then apply for your sedula. You will need this identity card to identify yourself on the island. Below you will find the steps you need to take to apply for a sedula in Curaçao.

Step 1: Apply for Declaration of Legal Status and get stamp #

Before you can apply for a sedula, you must have a Declaration of Law or permit. If you have received this by email, you can make an appointment with the Admissions Committee to confirm this decision in your passport by means of a stamp. Make sure that you an appointment makes to the Admissions Committee.

Step 2: Registration in Curacao #

With the stamp in your passport you can register at Kranshi, the city hall of Curacao, located at Roodeweg 42 in Willemstad (Otrobanda). You do not need an appointment to register in the population register.

Required documents for registration: #
  • Passport
  • Official copy of your birth certificate
  • Official copy of marriage certificate or divorce certificate
  • Proof of deregistration from the municipality or city where you lived
  • Proof of Award Declaration of Law or Permit

Step 3: Make an appointment for Sedula application #

Once your registration is complete, you can make an appointment to apply for your sedula. This can be done online via the website from the Curacao government. Please note that it may take a few days to weeks before you have an appointment. You could therefore make an appointment during step 2 to speed up the process.

Step 4: Apply for Sedula at Kranshi #

On the appointed day you go to Kranshi. Report to the counter, receive a number and wait until it is your turn.

Required documents for the sedula application: #
  • Passport
  • Printed proof of the approved Declaration of Law or permit
  • Our advice is to bring all the documents you used when applying for the Declaration of Legal Status. Occasionally you will be asked for these documents, so you can avoid the disappointment of having to make a new appointment.

A photo will be taken of you for the sedula, so make sure you look presentable. Your sedula will be printed on the spot and can be taken with you immediately.

You now officially have a sedula and are therefore a resident of Curaçao.
